Modified Bitumen
Modified bitumen combines new technology and the prefabrication advantages of single-ply with the more traditional BUR systems.
Modified bitumen is manufactured by adding “modifiers” to replace the normal plasticizers in asphalt that have been removed through an advanced refining process. The modifiers enhance the aging attributes and are applied to polyester or fiberglass to form a manageable fused sheet of membrane and bitumen. These sheets are either cold or heat applied.
Some modifiers like SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) and SEBS (styrene ethylene butadiene styrene) have added flexibility to the modified bitumen sheets which improves ease of installation and longevity of the system.
Modified bitumen is a low-cost alternative to traditional BUR systems and an excellent choice for historical building renovations on a budget.
