Equinox Rooftop Pool
Progressive Roofing loves to perform unique projects that some commercial contractors tend to avoid. The rooftop pool at the Equinox Gym at the Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall is no exception. Unlike other roofing systems where the design is meant to eliminate or reduce ponding of water, a rooftop pool has to be able to handle not only ponding water permanently, but an extraordinary volume of water- a pool.
The concept of rooftop pools is nothing new, dating back to some of the earliest sky gardens. However, as the centuries passed engineers were left to the taunting task of pushing the limits on pool size.
One of the most interesting -even considered today as a modern marvel- is the pool in the InterContinental Hotel in Chicago. This pool holds over 120,000 gallons of water and was built in 1929 on the 14th floor. The InterContinental Hotel was originally the Medinah Athletic Club where Olympic swimmers trained. One of the most notable was the athlete and later actor Johnny Weissmuller who after the 1924 and 1928 Olympics played the famous Tarzan.
Although the installation of rooftop pools has been done for decades, each location and structure has its own unique challenges.
Scope of work:
Progressive Roofing used a Sika Sarnafil waterproofing system that is designed for the Equinox Gym pool application. Progressive Roofing began the project by priming all pool walls and decking with conditioner. This was followed by installing Sarnafil G476 membrane that was first laid loose through vector mapping and tested by a third-party contractor to ensure proper allayment. This was hot-air welded followed by a loose laid Sarnafil drainage panel Geonet B and then a PVC protective layer was installed.
